Homocysteine Nutrients by Seeking Health supplies bioactive forms of four essential B-vitamins together with betaine (also known as trimethylglycine or TMG) to synergistically support methylation processes and normal homocysteine metabolism. The body's methylation process is vital for formation of essential cell components such as proteins, nucleic acids found in DNA and RNA, and phospholipids that form nerve cell membranes. By transferring methyl groups (three hydrogen atoms bonded to a carbon atom, known as CH3) from one molecule to another, methylation turns on genes, activates enzymes, drives detoxification reactions, influences hormone secretion, and helps maintain normal metabolism of homocysteine, a potentially harmful amino acid metabolite. Unfortunately, poor nutrition, oxidative stress, infections, metabolic defects, and various other factors can impair methylation processes throughout the body.*

To nutritionally support optimal methylation capacity, this product supplies folate, vitamin B12, B6, B2, and betaine in amounts and forms that are efficiently utilized and well-tolerated by the body. Taking just L-5-methylfolate is often times not sufficient for those with MTHFR mutations. Dr. Lynch provides these other ingredients, such as betaine (TMG), to help support healthy homocysteine levels and support the methylation cycle.*

Betaine is a powerful and important methyl donor for the body, especially for those who have MTHFR mutations. Vitamin B12 is crucial to the formation of healthy red blood cells, energy production, nervous system support, cognitive function, and homocysteine regulation. Vitamin B6 as P-5-P is important as a coenzyme for the normal metabolism of amino acids, carbohydrates and lipids. It is also involved in healthy cognitive development, immune health and homocysteine conversion. Riboflavin is important for body growth and red blood cell production and assists in the process of releasing energy from carbohydrates.*

For a methylation support supplement without the betaine, consider our Homocysteine Nutrients. For a B12- and folate-only product, consider our Active B12 with L-5-MTHF or our Optimal Liposomal Active B12 with L-5-MTHF.

  • Folate (L-methylfolate or 5-MTHF): Superior form of folate. Can readily donate its methyl groups to break down homocysteine and support your entire methylation cycle. 5-MTHF is the preferred form of folate in the human body and is far superior to folic acid.
  • Vitamin B12 (methylcobalamin & adenosylcobalamin): Act as cofactors to support homocysteine regulation. B12 accepts a methyl group from 5-MTHF to aid the conversion of homocysteine into the beneficial amino acid methionine.
  • R-5-P (riboflavin 5’-phosphate): The active form of vitamin B2 (riboflavin). R-5-P is a coenzyme for the MTRR and MTHFR enzymes that support homocysteine conversion into beneficial methionine. Riboflavin also assists in the process of releasing energy from carbohydrates.
  • P-5-P (pyridoxal 5’-phosphate): The active, readily available coenzyme form of vitamin B6. P-5-P is required by over 140 enzyme reactions in the body. It is a coenzyme for the CBS and CTH enzymes that convert homocysteine into the amino acid cysteine. Cysteine can then be used to make glutathione, taurine, and sulfate–all important compounds utilized in detoxification pathways.
  • Betaine (TMG): Also known as trimethylglycine or TMG. Betaine is a powerful and important methyl donor in the body, especially for those with MTHFR polymorphisms. Betaine acts as a coenzyme to increase BHMT enzyme activity. Betaine-homocysteine methyltransferase (BHMT) is an enzyme that converts homocysteine into the beneficial amino acid methionine, particularly in liver cells.

Pairs Well With

Optimal Magnesium a cofactor for the MAT1 enzyme need to convert methionine into SAMe Zinc Lozenge an important cofactor for both the MTR and BHMT enzymes which support conversion of homocysteine into methionine. PQQ Lozenge as antioxidant support for increased oxidative stress levels which occur during increased methylation.
