Methylation is an extremely important biochemical reaction that’s happening every second in every cell of the human body. Methylation plays many roles in the body, not limited to gene expression, detoxification, the production creatine and phosphatidylcholine, and maintaining healthy levels of glutathione, histamine, and homocysteine.

Many people struggle with adequate methylation, such as those with the MTHFR genetic polymorphism, particularly the C677T variety. The methylation cycle is also sensitive to oxidative stress and free radicals, especially hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide is generated during times of infection, mental stress and detoxification, to name a few.

When people begin supporting their methylation cycles, many discover the dosages available in most methylation support supplements is too strong, leading to symptoms of overmethylation including headaches, irritability, insomnia, runny nose, body pain, and itchy skin. Most methylation supplements contain higher levels of folate and vitamin B12, but these are not the only nutrients needed to support methylation, and too much of them can lend to unfavorable symptoms.

Optimal Methylate Chewable was designed by Dr. Ben Lynch to address the need for an easy-to-take vitamin that supports methylation quickly, comprehensively, and gently. The lower amounts per serving allow you to optimize rather than overwhelm the methylation cycle. By supporting methylation gently, common unpleasant side effects of taking methylation support may be lessened or prevented completely.*

On the biochemical level, Optimal Methylate Chewable primarily supports the Methylation pathway and the Folate pathway. The Transsulfuration pathway is also supported by the inclusion of vitamin B6 and molybdenum. The Biopterin pathway is supported indirectly via enhancement of the Methylation, Folate and Transsulfuration pathways.*

Genes supported by Optimal Methylate Chewable include:* MTHFR
MTHFD1
SHMT
MTHFS
MTR
CBS
SUOX
MAT1A
BHMT
MTRR
MAOA
MAOB
GSR
Common methyltransferase genes are such as HNMT, COMT, ASMT, GAMT, PEMT, etc.

The targeted ingredients found in Optimal Methylate Chewable are designed to provide the following benefits and actions:*
  • Riboflavin is the primary vitamin needed to support the MTHFR enzyme and it aids in the recycling of glutathione via the GSR enzyme. Riboflavin also supports the metabolism of serotonin, epinephrine and norepinephrine along with histamine.
  • Niacin helps support histamine metabolism along with quieting excitatory NMDA receptors by slowing the production of quinolinic acid.
  • Vitamin B6 supports the first step in converting high levels of harmful homocysteine to beneficial glutathione via the CBS enzyme. Vitamin B6 also supports the reduction of glutamate to GABA.
  • Folate is included in two forms: 80% as L-5-MTHF (l-methylfolate) and 20% as folinic acid. L-5-MTHF is the active methylated form of folate needed to support the recycling of homocysteine back to the body's main methyl donor, SAMe, via the MTR enzyme. Folinic acid (calcium folinate) is added to support the production of BH4 and ATP.
  • Vitamin B12 is included in three different forms. Methylcobalamin helps to support the MTR enzyme to prevent l-methylfolate from getting stuck and 'methyl trapped'. Hydroxocobalamin has been added to balance hydrogen sulfide levels which may be increased via CBS enzyme stimulation. Hydroxocobalamin is also added to balance reactive forms of nitric oxide which may be increased via oxidative stress. In this case, hydroxocobalamin acts as an antioxidant similar to PQQ. Adenosylcobalamin has been included for mitochondrial health to support the energy production needed to keep the methylation cycle moving.
  • Choline and betaine (trimethylglycine, TMG) support the recycling of homocysteine back into methionine via the BHMT enzyme, particularly when the MTR enzyme is under-functioning. Choline also supports the synthesis of phosphatidylcholine, which requires a large percent of the body’s methylation to produce. For this reason, it is also important to maintain good choline levels when supporting methylation.
  • Magnesium is required for the production of the body's main methyl donor, SAMe. Even with sufficient folate, B12, choline and TMG supporting the recycling of homocysteine, SAMe will not be produced without magnesium. An under-functioning COMT enzyme is a common culprit of methylation side effects. Magnesium also supports the COMT enzyme so it can effectively balance dopamine, norepinephrine, epinephrine and estrogen levels. Magnesium is also used in the conversion of glutamate to GABA, and elevated glutamate levels are a common reason for the side effects experienced with many l-methylfolate supplements. Glutathione production is also supported with magnesium via the GCL and GSS enzymes.
  • Zinc is an important cofactor for the MTR and BHMT enzymes, which helps them bind to homocysteine. Zinc also supports the reduction of excitatory NMDA activity.
  • Molybdenum helps to support the metabolism of sulfites generated during Transsulfuration. As the methylation cycle is stimulated, so is the CBS enzyme. In the event one consumes too much methylation support, having molybdenum present can help support sulfite metabolism.
  • PQQ acts as an antioxidant, helping to support methylation via the reduction of oxidative stress. No matter how much folate or B12 is present, oxidative stress will slow down the methylation cycle. Additionally, the methylation cycle will not work well via the 'long route' through the MTR enzyme when higher levels of oxidative stress are present. PQQ also protects BH4 against the effects of oxidative stress, which helps support the production of neurotransmitters and the healthy form of nitric oxide. PQQ is also helpful during times of upregulated CBS enzyme activity by protecting against cysteine oxidation.

Suggested Use

Chew 1 tablet with or without food. Tablets may be cut into halves or quarters if a lesser dose is desired and taken throughout the day. Do not take within 5 hours of bedtime as it may interfere with sleep. Use as directed by your healthcare professional.

Warnings

Children and pregnant or lactating women should consult their healthcare professional prior to use. Do not use if tamper seal is damaged. Potential side effects of Methylate are often alleviated by eating food and/or taking one capsule of Niacin (50 mg).*

Storage

Keep closed in a cool, dry place out of reach by children.
